Most Evacuations Lifted in Highland After Devastating Mudslides

Most evacuation orders have been lifted in Highland, more than a week after mud and flooding forced dozens of people out of their homes.

Highland city officials say Cherrywood Court and The Village are now open for residents and authorized personnel.

The only area that remains under evacuation is Autumn Chase Drive.

No major problems were reported as a result of the most recent round of rain on Wednesday.

Crews had been working overtime to clean-up some of the mud and debris in advance of that storm.

More than 100,000 sandbags had been used to build walls to keep more muck out of the community.

Prison inmates and church volunteers grabbed their shovels Tuesday and helped with the cleanup efforts.

Walls of mud and water chased people from their homes at the height of the storm last Wednesday.

Five homes were completely destroyed and 70 others were damaged. One house, just 5 years old, had mud packed up to the windows. The family said when the mud and water rushed in, they had no choice but to get out and leave everything behind.
