Steve Cooley cuts into Kamala Harris' lead in attorney general's race

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris leads Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley by 29,399 votes in the attorney general's race entering today's ballot count.

Cooley, a Republican, cut 1,331 votes from Harris' lead in Thursday's count of vote-by-mail, provisional and damaged ballots.

Harris, a Democrat, has 4,245,849 votes to Cooley's 4,216,450, or 45.9 percent versus 45.6 percent, according to figures released by the Secretary of State's Office.

Harris held a 30,730-vote lead entering Thursday's ballot count.

There are 670,994 uncounted ballots remaining - 249,002 vote-by-mail ballots, 378,254 provisional ballots and 43,738 that are either damaged, could not be machine-read and need to be remade and ballots diverted by optical scanners for further review, according to the Secretary of State's Office.
