Firefighter Ambushed in Apparent Murder Suicide Attack

Investigators say Nick Barrios, 41, was walking a woman to her car about 3:30 a.m. Sunday when they were confronted by Rene Trejo.

36-year-old Trejo, of Moreno Valley, fired several rounds at Barrios in front of a home on the 5900 block of Windemere Way.

Police say Trejo then followed the woman back into the house where he shot himself to death in front of her.

Barrios, a 12-year veteran of the department, was rushed to a hospital where he died a short time later.

Trejo is believed to have had a relationship with the woman several months ago.
