The driver in Monday's crash also is expected to face at least felony hit-and-run manslaughter charges, investigators said.

The crash happened at 3:22 p.m. at E. 1st St and Soto Ave. in Boyle Heights.

Killed in the accident was 70-year-old Eduardo Gaytan who was walking in a crosswalk.

Gaytan is decribed by family members as a college graduate, a musician, a former driver with the L.A. Rapid Transit District and a daily traveler on the bus and Metro system he used to visit friends across the city.

CHP Officer Miguel Luevano told reporters that a black BMW traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on E. 1st St. ran a red light, struck a pedestrian and hit a school bus.

The force of the impact caused the bus to spin and land on its side.

The BMW that struck the bus was smashed all the way into the passenger compartment.

LAPD Chief Charles Beck said the driver and the passenger inside the BMW ran from the scene.

Two of the boys -- the 17-year-old driver and a 14-year-old companion -- were grabbed by nearby construction workers while the third, whose age was unavailable, was arrested when he turned up at a hospital with injuries from the collision.
