The crash on Mulholland Highway, east of Stokes Canyon Road, was reported at 1:29 p.m. Wednesday, said CHP Officer Leland Tang.

Kmiec, 58, was driving a 2009 Hyundai Accent west on Mulholland Highway when the vehicle veered onto the soft dirt shoulder and went into a drainage ditch, Tang said.

Sister Mary Campbell, 74, of Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church, died at the scene, according to the officer.

Kmiec, on leave from the Pepperdine University School of Law, and Monsignor John Sheridan, 94, also of Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church, were airlifted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Sheridan's injuries, initially described as major, were listed today as moderate, said Tang.

Kmiec was being treated for moderate injuries.
