Editors of Washington Monthly base their list on different criteria from the better-known ranking system by U.S. News & World Report, which bases its list on endowment size, alumni giving and competitive admissions.

Washington Monthly rates colleges "based on their contribution to the public good," and in three categories: "Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country)."

A full list of the top 30 National Universities can be seen in the September/October issue of Washington Monthly magazine.
