Suicide bomber targets Iraqi army recruits, at least 60 killed, 125 wounded in gruesome blast

The U.S. military may be preparing to leave Iraq, but the deadly violence will likely remain. A suicide bomber killed 60 people and wounded 125 Tuesday morning, blowing himself up near an Iraqi military recruitment center in Baghdad, officials told The Associated Press.

The explosion left behind a gruesome scene according to various reports and eyewitnesses.

"Severed hands and legs were falling over me," said Yasir Ali, who was waiting at the recruitment center when the blast occurred. "I was soaked with blood from the body parts and wounded and dead people falling over and beside me."

Ali said the suicide bomber walked up to one of the officers at the center and detonated the explosives.

With unemployment in Iraq at 60%, hundreds were lined up outside the recruitment center since Monday evening, the BBC reported.

An Iraqi military spokesman pinned the blame on Al Qaeda.

The spokesman said there were up to 1,000 recruits at the center when the bomber struck because Tuesday was the last day to enlist. The center accepts roughly 250 new recruits each week.
