BBC TV presenter Ray Gosling arrested over gay lover's mercy killing

In a BBC interview dedicated to end-of-life issues, recorded three months ago but broadcast on East Midlands TV on Monday, Gosling, 70, admitted that he had used a pillow to smother the man.

The broadcaster, from Nottingham, UK, admitted in BBC's Inside Out programme: "I picked up the pillow and smothered him to death."

Gosling said he killed the unnamed man as he lay seriously ill in hospital "in the early period of AIDS" -- likely to be during the 1980s.

He claims the couple had previously agreed that he would help end his lover’s life if his pain became intolerable, and that he had no regrets about what he had done.

In the film, he said: "It's a terrible situation. I loved him to bits.

"We had a pact - he said if the pain gets bad and if nothing can be done, don't let him linger on.

"I don't think it's a crime."

"When you love someone, it is difficult to see them suffer."
