New York Times To Limit Number Of Articles Free On Its Site

New York Times Co. (NYT) launched what it called a new model to charge consumers for access to articles on its Web site in 2011 in hopes that it can generate a new, reliable revenue stream to offset weakness in the advertising market and revive the company's flagging fortunes.

The publisher said it will limit the number of free reports viewers can see online per month, offering a metered subscription service to those who exceed the limit. Subscribers to the print edition of The New York Times will continue to have unlimited free access online.

The decision concluded a year of analysis and internal deliberation at the company over how to build a viable online subscription business without muting the newspaper's influence and its web advertising prospects amid deep skepticism over whether large numbers of consumers will pay for news online at a time when its widely available for free.

The Times Co. said its metered model will "provide the necessary flexibility to keep an appropriate ratio between free and paid content and stay connected to a search-driven Web."
