Minneapolis police officer accused in bank robbery

A Minneapolis police SWAT team member was charged Thursday in the takeover-style robbery of a suburban bank, and authorities said he confessed to several other armed robberies in the Twin Cities area.

Timothy Edward Carson, 28, was ordered held without bail at a federal court hearing. He did not enter a plea.

Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan expressed "shock and embarrassment" at the allegations but also said other officers in his department had helped break the case.

Carson was charged with one count of bank robbery in the holdup at a Wells Fargo bank branch one day earlier.

The motive was unclear. But as Magistrate Judge Jeanne J. Graham appointed a public defender for Carson, she noted a report that said he was carrying "quite a bit of debt."

An affidavit from an FBI agent said Carson admitted robbing the bank and "admitted having committed numerous other armed robberies" in the area.
