New York Governor To Propose Term Limits For Albany

Governor David Paterson is expected to unveil a set of sweeping proposals to crack down on political corruption -- including term limits for all state office holders -- when he gives his State of the State Address from Albany later today.

According to administration officials, Paterson will call for more ethics oversight and to limit statewide officials to two four-year terms and members of the state Legislature to six two-year terms.

That reform would require an amendment to the state constitution.

Paterson will also urge an overhaul of public campaign financing, using the city's system as a model.

"Ethics reform is important but the number one issue is taxes, government spending, wasteful government spending," said Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos.

"All of those things that New Yorkers want -- the job security -- depends on whether or not our legislators make decisions that are good for the citizenry and not just the special interest," said Barbara Bartoletti of the New York State League of Women Voters.

The state would provide matching funds to candidates for state office, limit lobbyist contributions and ban corporate contributions.
