Massachusetts: John McCain backs Scott Brown in Senate race

State Senator Scott Brown yesterday trumpeted an endorsement from Republican heavyweight John McCain, the former presidential candidate, while Attorney General Martha Coakley raided Brown’s Senate district for endorsements from local officials, as the two sparred in their campaign for a US Senate seat.

In a release, Brown touted the endorsement of Senator John McCain of Arizona, who lauded Brown’s record of fighting wasteful spending and higher taxes .

Meanwhile, Coakley dipped into Brown’s electoral backyard to unveil endorsements from about 25 local politicians in towns from the Wrentham Republican’s district. The string of selectmen and school committee members were from Millis, Natick, Wellesley, Wayland, and Needham.

The McCain endorsement stressed Brown’s military experience - he is a lieutenant colonel in the Army National Guard - and his fiscal stances.

“Scott Brown has a long record of public service fighting wasteful spending and higher taxes,’’ McCain said. “As an officer on the Army National Guard, he understands the importance of a strong military and the necessity of protecting our interests around the world.’’ It was not yet known if McCain would be campaigning for Brown in Massachusetts.
