New York senator contacts NBA on jersey outsourcing issue

Adidas’ action may result in American Classic Outfitters of Perry, in Wyoming County, losing its lucrative contract with the NBA to make jerseys, which could see the firm lay off 100 people. American Classic Outfitters produces about half of the NBA jerseys worn by its players and teams. Losing the NBA contract could see American Classic Outfitters see a $7 million drop in annual revenues.

Schumer, last week, called on Adidas to change its plans — something the company has refused.

Now, New York’s senior senator has written to NBA Commissioner David Stern asking him to intervene and force Adidas to backtrack. NBA officials could not be reached for comment.

“The bottom line is these jerseys have always been and should always be made here in the United States,” Schumer said.

Last year, Germany-based Adidas extended its deal with American Classic Outfitters for five years. Because of the deal, American Classic Outfitters invested $1 million in new equipment in its Perry plant, specifically for the Adidas deal.
