Roadshow: Tips for avoiding Bay Bridge closing problems

If you're heading from the South Bay to San Francisco or other points north or east, here are some tips for skirting potential backups due to this weekend's closing of the Bay Bridge.

  • Highway 101: Avoid it north of Highway 92. Take Interstate 280 into San Francisco.

  • A train? Catch BART in Millbrae to go to San Francisco, or Caltrain from San Jose or other stops north of there.

  • Going to wine country: Take either I-280 onto 19th Avenue and across the Golden Gate Bridge or take I-880 to I-80 and either the Richmond or other North Bay bridges.

  • Going to the Cal-Maryland game Saturday night? If driving, leave early. Expect a slowdown on I-880 near Highway 92 where the northbound ramp to west 92 is closed. Or catch BART.

  • Going to Sacramento or Lake Tahoe? Take I-680 to I-580 to I-205 and then I-5. Avoid I-80.

  • Going from the East Bay to the Peninsula? Take either the Dumbarton Bridge or Highway 237. Expect delays on the San Mateo Bridge.

  • A must: before heading out the door, either call 511 or go to www.511.org for updated traffic conditions. And then pay attention to radio reports.
