"It's pretty quiet" on the fire's frontlines, said fire spokesman John Huschke early Friday.

Crews have credited lower temperatures with allowing them to make gains in battling the Station fire, which has burned 585 square kilometres of the Angeles National Forest.

But the fire is pushing east and toward Monrovia, Sierra Madre and Pasadena, officials said. At its peak, thousands of residents living in the Los Angeles foothills were forced to evacuate and 12,000 buildings were threatened.

The fire has consumed almost 650 square kilometres, destroyed 64 homes and injured at least three people.
