Michigan bill aims to make people pay parking tickets

LANSING, Mich. - People who haven't paid their parking tickets may have to ante up before they can renew their Michigan driver's license.

Chicago Tribune | Published: 08/21/2009 02:58

State lawmakers heard testimony Thursday on legislation that wouldn't let a license be renewed or issued for someone with three or more unpaid parking tickets. Current law prohibits license renewals for motorists with six or more unpaid tickets.

The House Transportation Committee didn't vote on the bill.

Democratic Rep. Roy Schmidt of Grand Rapids says taking a tougher stance on parking scofflaws would help financially strapped cities collect their parking fines.

A man who testified against the bill said paying parking tickets doesn't relate to whether someone can safely drive.
