New safety measures pushed after 2 California crashes

SAN FRANCISCO — A transportation agency says it's implementing new safety measures after two major crashes within three weeks.

The San Francisco Municipal Travel Agency's chief safety officer, James Dougherty, and other officials spoke at a public hearing Monday to address the safety concerns.

Dougherty says new measures include allowing the system's control center to remotely stop trains and expanding random safety performance inspections.

Two light rail trains collided at the West Portal station on July 18, injuring 47 people. Sixteen days later, a train rear-ended an SUV and pushed it into another train. Six people had minor injuries in that crash.

Officials note that there have been fewer collisions, compared to the same period last year.
