LA board OKs construction of new light rail line

Los Angeles transit officials have approved the start of construction for a new light rail line to go along the city's black commercial district.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board certified on Thursday the final environmental impact report for the 8.5-mile line along Crenshaw Boulevard. The vote allows the agency to solicit contract proposals.

Construction on the estimated $1.72 billion project is slated to begin next year.

The line will connect downtown through South LA to the Green Line, which stops nearly a mile from Los Angeles International Airport.
