"It was pretty widely felt," said Caltech seismologist Dr. Kate Hutton. "I think that's the normal area of an earthquake to be felt of this size in California."

The quake was first measured at magnitude 4.2, later upgraded to 4.3, and then put back to 4.2, according to the USGS.

Capt. Mark Savage, of the LA County Fire Department, said shaking was felt in "several areas of the county." He said the department has received no reports of damage.

Savage said people at the East Los Angeles headquarters felt shaking. The shaking also was felt in Hollywood, Malibu and parts of downtown Los Angeles.

It was followed three minutes later by a magnitude-2.0 aftershock centered four miles north of San Fernando.

A 3.0 aftershock followed around 2:35 p.m. in the same area.
