Dustin Ackley (3-for-3, two RBI) led off the eighth with a double and Carp followed by blasting a long homer into the upper deck in right field off Hisanori Takahashi (3-3) to break a 3-3 tie.

The poke made a winner of Tom Wilhelmsen (2-0), who blanked the Angels in the eighth. Brandon League racked up his 32nd save as the Mariners won the first of a four-game series.

Mariners starter Blake Beavan yielded three runs on eight hits through seven frames.

Mark Trumbo finished 2-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Angels, who fell 3 1/2 games behind idle first-place Texas in the American League West.
