L.A. Plans 405 Shutdown, Drivers Predict Carmageddon

The section of Interstate 405 in West L.A. between LAX and the San Fernando Valley has long been known as a traffic-snarled mess to residents. The drive has been made more daunting in the past year due to construction widening the freeway to create carpool lanes through the Sepulveda Pass. 

Come the third weekend in July, the entire freeway will be closed to traffic. Starting at 10 p.m. on July 15th, the CHP will shut down the 405 from the I-10 freeway interchange in West Los Angeles to the connector to the 101 freeway in Sherman Oaks, in order to demolish the Mulholland Drive Bridge connecting Brentwood to Bel Air.  The 10-mile stretch of freeway will re-open at 5 a.m. Monday the 18th, in time for the morning rush hour.
