Mayor Villaraigosa stresses importance of educational accountability |

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has always understood the need for policymakers and politicians to be passionate about improvements to the school system. At the Education Trust – West Summit, entitled “Innovations in Teacher Evaluation: A Forum to Showcase Promising Practices and Discuss Implications for State Policy,” on Thursday, he highlighted the need for increased accountability among teachers, further displaying his willingness to go to bat for students.

“Our schools will never truly serve all students and all teachers until we have a robust and relevant teacher evaluation system,” Mayor Villaraigosa said. “That system must provide accurate information for students and parents, accountability to principals and school leaders and meaningful feedback and support for teachers.”
Going beyond the local Los Angeles focus, the mayor suggested that there is a desperate need for changes in the California education code. Making such changes could provide unified improvements regarding the manner in which educators are evaluated. Several forms of teacher measurement systems are utilized throughout the state, and these systems are important not only for accountability, but also for the betterment of the education system as a whole. If administrators do not have a clear understanding of what teachers are doing right and wrong, it is impossible to provide better forms of instruction for students. Furthermore, if the systems are uniform, that would allow for the state to better assess its educational needs.
