Warm, offshore winds fuel Southern California fires

One blaze that started on a road near Catalina Island's yacht club spread about 40 acres inland, burning brush in a sparsely populated area. No structures have been damaged and no injuries were reported.

The fire was 30 percent contained late Monday, and firefighters were working through the night to tamp out hotspots.

In San Diego County, a brush fire burned about 100 acres in a remote area of Camp Pendleton.

A base spokesman, Sgt. John Jackson, told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the fire was "in the middle of nowhere" and base firefighters hadn't called for outside assistance.

In Sunland, a 5-acre grass fire briefly threatened homes and injured one firefighter before the flames were brought under control.
