The sailors were working on the flight deck of the John C. Stennis during the mission when the Marine F/A-18C Hornet's engine went out and exploded into flames.

Four of the sailors were airlifted in stable condition to Naval Medical Center San Diego for treatment. The others were treated on board the ship, which was docked 100 miles off the coast.

The pilot was unhurt.

The jet, based at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station near San Diego, is believed to have received over $1 million in damages. The Stennis did not receive any major structural damage.
