Official: Minuscule Amount of Radioactive Fallout in Southern California

Radioactive fallout from Japan has reached Southern California, but levels are about billion times lower than what would be hazardous to people's health, a Vienna diplomat said Friday.

The diplomat has access to UN information tracking radiation, but asked for anonymity because the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization doesn't publicize it's data.

California health officials announced Thursday that they have started monitoring radiation levels at over a dozen sites.

Data from the California Department of Public Health will be made available sometime next week.

A forecast from the UN had predicted the radioactive plume from failed Japanese reactors would come across the Pacific by the end of the week.

The forecast explained that the plume will lose radioactive force as it travels and may not even be detectable by the time it reaches Southern California.
